SUP Overview

The Hala Atcha 9’6” was made for serious adventure. The original iSUP made for whitewater, the Atcha is still a popular choice with its total package of durability, responsiveness, and maneuverability. If you’re looking for an intelligently engineered iSUP that can take a beating, then the Atcha 9’6” is certainly one to consider.

The Hala Atcha 9’6” measures 9’6” x 36” x 6”. The extra-wide profile of the board keeps things stable even in the roughest conditions, making it the perfect companion for your whitewater adventures.

At 29 pounds, it’s a pretty hefty iSUP which makes us glad that it comes with a wheeled carrying bag. Even though it isn’t the largest SUP around, the Atcha 9’6” can still carry an impressive capacity of up to 350 pounds.

The Atcha 9’6” is made using Hala’s signature Core Construction technology which is a double-layer drop-stitch technique. This bomber technology was specifically made for the most hardcore of iSUPs – it’s not lightweight but it’s undeniably tough.

With its 9’6” length, the Atcha is certainly on the shorter end when it comes to iSUPs. Since it’s designed for river and whitewater surfing, the length of the Atcha is just enough to reduce the torque on the board, especially when navigating tricky turns. This means that you’re less likely to lose control of it, even when paddling through sections of a river that introduce sudden changes in direction.

When paddling in whitewater, you need the ability to regain control when hitting rough spots. This is where the full rocker of the Atcha 9’6″ comes in. The full rocker gives you a condensed center of gravity and a narrow balance point while also keeping the nose out of the water. The sharp, upturned swallowtail outline also adds extra control, allowing you to maintain direction.

The 4-millimeter EVA foam deck pad runs almost the entire length of the board. This means you can change your stance without losing traction. It also has a 1.5-inch raised stomp pad at the tail to help you turn and make it easier to find your footing without having to look down at the SUP. At the forward section are six soft rigging points, allowing you to reposition cargo as needed.

Carrying handles at the center of the deck, nose, and tail make it easy to carry the board and also handle it in and around the water. There are also two cloth side handles located a bit forward from the central handle and along the rails of the board. These are meant for easy access should you need to recover from a wipeout.

A single stainless-steel D-ring at the tail provides a tether point for the ankle leash while another D-ring at the bottom of the nose end is optimally located for towing.

The quad side-fins offer superior stability and control. You also have the option of removing the four click fins. Even with all four attached, you don’t have to worry about them getting damaged in shallow regions of the river since they are made of durable gummy material. The Atcha 9’6″ is also equipped with the patent-pending Stompbox retractable fins which retract into the fin box upon impact. With this combination of innovative fin technology, you won’t need to worry about losing a fin even in the roughest and gnarliest of rivers.

In terms of performance and maneuverability, Hala has set the gold standard with the Atcha 9’6”. The board is packed full of features that’ll satisfy the most demanding of paddlers. This board is a bit on the expensive side, but you certainly get what you pay for.
